Magnetic Island

Visitors have been coming to Magnetic Island to holiday for over a hundred years. Magnetic Island 10 km from Townsville in tropical North Queensland is a ruggedly beautiful and very special place. With an average of 320 sunny days annually, it can easily be described as a natural island paradise.

Magnetic Island has a unique blend of world heritage marine and bush Park, some of Queensland's best beaches, The Great Barrier Reef, outback historic gold mines, rain forests and unique wildlife.

More than half the Island is actually national park, its huge granite boulders and towering hoop pines dominate the landscape. Magnetic Island is a natural haven for wildlife such as kolas, wallabies, possums and a variety of tropical bird life.

The Portuguese are believed to have been the first white men to sight the Island, sometime in sixteenth century. It was Captain Cook however, who first mapped its coast. He named it Magnetical Island because his compass seemed to loose its accuracy whilst near it.
